...For I was in prison and you came to me.
- Matthew 25:36
OUR VALUES
OUR FIVEFOLD FOCUS
Hope Prison Ministry is dedicated to bringing change by focusing on the five groups most impacted by crime.
PRISONERS
We know that no one leaves prison the same. We believe that every prisoner is made in the image of God and has the potential to change their life and become a positive role model by acknowledging their crimes, developing themselves spiritually and working on their character.
VICTIMS
Victims of crime are set free, counselled and supported as Hope Prison Ministries seeks to help victims become victors of their situation. We invite victims to dialogue with us as part of our Restorative Justice courses and to receive counselling to bring lasting healing and change.
FAMILIES
The children, spouses, parents and extended family of prisoners are often the most affected by a prisoner’s poor choices. We counsel, facilitate reconciliation and draw support around families. Our journey of forgiveness and healing often leads to longstanding relationships with families.
PAROLEES /WARDERS
We support parolees as they take their first vulnerable steps out of prison. Support groups become a family where they voice their hopes and fears. Hope Prison Ministry knows that warders are central to making prisons ‘places of new beginnings’. Our program takes them from ‘Fatigue to Fulfillment’.
VOLUNTEERS
Hope Prison Ministries is largely powered by the time and talents of our very dedicated volunteers. We partner with churches, communities and organisations to offer support, training and encouragement to our more than eighty volunteers. Our work is done with careful thought of the volunteer experience.
South Africa has the third-highest crime rate in the world and prisons are more than 50% overcrowded
DONATE NOW to empower Hope Prison Ministry to stand in the gap—both for our prisons and for our nation.
GIVE TO MAKE AN IMPACT
Hope Prison Ministry brings impactful change in so many ways. Be an integral part of undoing the negative effects of crime on our South African communities.
RESTORATIVE JUSTICE
Sponsor our week-long Restorative Justice Program in prisons all over South Africa. The Restorative Justice Program places a few inmates at a table with a caring facilitator who helps them process concepts like taking responsibility, the victim experience and forgiveness. Facilitators then counsel the inmates one-on-one for ten weeks. Your donation goes towards course elements like handbooks for inmates, lunches at the course or transport money for facilitators and family members so that relationships may be restored.
COUNSELLING
“Hurt people hurt others” – Pastor Jonathan Clayton. Hope Prison Ministries brings counselling to the dark corners of prisons, where inmates least expect to find understanding and a place to heal from the wounds of childhood. A high percentage of inmates report experiencing physical or sexual abuse as children or absent or addicted parents. The impact of counselling cannot be overstated, it is the miracle cure that our society is waiting for. But it is not cheap or instant so your donation is much appreciated.
LIFE SKILLS
Volunteers offer support in tutoring or training inmates in computers, job readiness or communication skills. Prisoners also often study during their sentence, so tutoring helps them make the most of their time. We also offer soft skills, challenging inmates to grow in teamwork, problem-solving, time management and critical thinking. These skills are vital as inmates step back out into their communities and try to make a life for themselves. Sponsor now and be a part of transforming lives and society.
TESTIMONIALS
Over the last twenty-five years Hope Prison Ministries has changed thousands of lives. But more than any other group of people we are driven to celebrate every individual and go beyond seeing people as just a number. Here are some of the memorable stories of individual lives changed.

``As a first-time volunteer I think we treat T.H.U.Gs - Traumatised Humans Unable to Grieve and to sit with the inmates as they realise thay have the power to heal others as God heals them. This is an amazing experience.``PHINIUS SEBATSANE

``I never understood the effects of (my) crime. This (Restorative Justice) class has enlightened me to a lot of things. When I think back…I want to cry.”ANONYMOUS

Steven Swart - Forever Changed
``I'm walking in a forest and I realise that its the forest where I grew up - and its like everything has started again and I look down and my hands are small, like I am a child again. That started to happen near the end of the Restorative Justice Program in Pollsmoor, five years ago.
This dream came to me again and again in prison. I started to know that it was Jesus calling me to a place where he would meet me. One night in Maximum B it happened. I dreamed of the forest again and Jesus came to me. He was dressed normally but I just knew it was him. I have committed my life to Jesus since then and I have a friend like I never ever knew. Through counselling from Hope Prison Ministry I also started to heal and to see God as my Father. I am changed and new and no longer afraid of 'Outside'. I have just started a new job as a carpenter. Praise God and thank you to Hope Prison Ministry.
