Why Prison Ministry?
Today’s inmates are tomorrow’s leaders, either for the community or for the gangs. Hope Prison Ministry is dedicated to raising a new generation of Christian leaders from Africa’s prisons. We believe that a prisoner—transformed by the grace of a loving God—has unique potential to bring reconciliation and peace to a nation devastated by violence.
Hope Prison Ministry’s team has been serving South Africa’s correctional centres for twenty-five years and their experience is available to you. We offer an internship program that combines academic and theological training, practical ministry, and cross-cultural living. No prison ministry experience is required – only a desire to learn and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
Opportunities for interns vary depending on program duration and time of year, and may include:
-Observing and facilitating Restorative Justice courses
-Teaching Bible studies or life skills seminars
-Visiting the families of prisoners in the community
-Attending ex-prisoner support groups
-Hosting special events for correctional officers
All interns will receive training and practice in lesson planning, public speaking, facilitating small groups, and one-on-one coaching. Specialised tracks are also available in the areas of law, social work, and counseling.
Dates: Flexible between March and November
Duration: 6 weeks – 6 months
Cost: $350 USD per week, which covers catering, housing, local transportation, training materials, and program staff. Financial assistance is available for interns from Southern Africa.
Ready for the challenge?
Prison ministry is a boot-camp that will both challenge and strengthen your leadership ability. More importantly, it is your answer to Jesus’ simple invitation: “I was in prison and you visited me.” Contact our Program Director to discuss your availability and request an application.
